Heather was 2 years old when she suddenly developed a limp in her leg. Over the next few days, Heather deteriorated to the point where she could not attend day care because she could barely stand on her own. At the family's local pediatrician's office, test after test was run on Heather with no clues to the cause of her condition. Finally, Heather was rushed to Houston's Children's Miracle Network hospital where neurologists determined that Heather suffered from an extremely rare and potentially fatal neurological disease called Guillan-Barre syndrome. If Heather's condition had been left untreated, her paralysis would have continued up to her chest and would freeze her breathing muscles, leaving her dependant on a ventilator. Heather was admitted to the hospital for five days while she received daily doses of antibiotics and physical therapy for her weakened legs. Three weeks after her symptoms appeared, Heather returned to her normal vivacious self. Today, she is a fearless 4-year-old, jumping on the living room sofa and splashing around in the family's swimming pool.
